Why does it take so long for our sump pump to turn on when we get heavy rain?

In heavy rain the pit takes a while to fill, or the pump trips late because the float is stuck, set too high, or the pit is too small. What is actually happening down there
A sump pump does nothing until the pit fills. Water seeps in and climbs, lifting a float that flips the switch and kicks the pump on. That delay during a storm is the pit filling. A pause is normal. A long pause is not. If your pump waits until the floor is wet, here is what we look at.
The float is stuck. Sediment, a kinked cord, or the float pressed against the pit wall keeps it from rising, so water climbs but the switch never trips.
The switch is set too high, so the pump waits longer than it should. Lower the trigger point and it fires sooner.
The pit is too small or too shallow. A small pit fills fast in a hard rain, and a shallow one gives the pump no head start.
There is no real drainage feeding the pit. This is the big one. With a sump but no full perimeter drain, water crosses the slab to reach the pit, pooling at the edges first, often at the floor wall joint where the slab meets the wall. That is the seam water finds.
Why heavy rain makes it worse
Around most New England homes the soil against the foundation is disturbed backfill, the looser dirt put back when the house was built. It drains slower and holds more water than packed ground, so a downpour saturates it and pushes water at the wall at once.
Add NH frost heave over the years, which presses walls inward and opens hairline cracks, and water arrives fast at the base of the wall. If the pit cannot catch it quickly, the pump looks slow when really the water is not reaching it.
The fix that actually solves it
A single pump in a single pit only catches what falls near it. The durable fix is interior perimeter drainage feeding the pit from every wall.

For a crawl space the answer is crawlspace encapsulation, not Forever Dry: a 12-mil wall and 20-mil floor vapor barrier, dimpled drainage matting under it, sealed seams, a dehumidifier, and a sump. Encapsulation runs $3,000 to $25,000.
We do not dig up your yard. Exterior excavation waterproofing is a poor fix in our field experience, and we have seen those jobs fail in two to three years. Interior drainage lasts.
You may not need a new system yet
Sometimes the slow start is a five-minute fix: a float freed of sediment, a switch lowered, a backup checked. If that is all it is, we will tell you. You do not need a new system to fix a sticky float.
If you do not have a backup pump, that is worth a look. A charged backup battery moves about a residential pool’s worth of water, roughly 15,000 to 20,000 gallons, when the power goes out, and outages and heavy rain often hit together. The 603 backup is battery only.
