Why a horizontal crack runs the whole way

So the reason is rarely the wall going bad on its own. It is the load on the outside.
How worried should you be
It depends on how far it has gone. A thin horizontal line with no bow may just need monitoring and a sealed injection to keep water out. A wall that is bowing, leaning, or has shifted at the crack is carrying real stress and needs support added.
