What is the importance of a foundation drain?

A foundation drain matters because it gives water a path away from your foundation before that water finds its way in through cracks or the floor wall joint. Without one, water builds up against the walls and floor, then pushes inside. With a working drain feeding a sump pump, that water gets collected and pumped out instead. Here is what is going on under your house.

When your home was built, the crew dug a hole, set the foundation, then put the dirt back. That dirt is disturbed backfill. It is looser than the packed ground around it. So it drains slowly and holds water right up against your walls. Add a heavy rain or a spring melt, and water pools exactly where you do not want it.

A foundation drain catches that water. It sits low, along the footing, and carries water to one place. From there a sump pump lifts it out and away. No drain, no collection point. The water just sits and waits for a crack.

There are two kinds. Exterior drains go in around the outside of the footing when a house is built. Interior drains go in along the inside edge of the basement floor. We install the interior kind. It is the durable fix.

Why interior? Because we have watched the exterior approach fail. Dig out the foundation from the outside, seal it, backfill it, and in about two or three years the soil settles, the seal gives, and the water comes back. That is a lot of digging for a fix that does not hold. Our co-owner Nik is plain about it. An interior drainage system does not fight the soil. It manages the water that gets through, every time, for good.

What a foundation drain works with

A drain alone is half the job. Water has to go somewhere. The frost matters here too. New Hampshire winters drive frost deep into the ground, and that frost can push foundation walls inward over a season. What drives the cost

Cost comes down to how much drain you need and what the basement is fighting. Linear feet of perimeter is the big one. A small basement needs less pipe and a smaller pump. You do not always need the full system. If you have a damp crawl space instead of a wet basement, that is crawlspace encapsulation, a different product. If you have one weeping crack and a dry floor, that might just be crack injection. We will say so.
