A thin vertical crack in a poured wall is often just the concrete curing. The cracks that worry us are the wide, horizontal, or stair-step ones, because those usually mean the wall is moving. Here in New England the ground does a lot to your foundation. When your house was built, the crew dug a hole, poured the walls, then pushed the dirt back in around them. That dirt is disturbed backfill. It is looser than the packed soil farther out, so it drains slow and holds water. Wet soil gets heavy. Heavy soil pushes on the wall. Then winter shows up.
NH frost heave is the other big one. Water in that backfill freezes, expands, and shoves the wall inward. Do that for a few winters and a small crack becomes a leaking crack. So what kind of crack do you have? A few plain rules we use in the field.
Thin and vertical, hairline width, in a poured wall? Usually shrinkage. That is the concrete settling as it cured. It can still let water in, but it is not pulling your house apart.
Horizontal, running side to side, often with a bow in the wall? That is pressure from outside. Take that one seriously.
Stair-step cracks in a block or brick wall point to settling or soil movement. Worth a look.
Cracks that keep growing, doors that stick, floors that slope mean we want eyes on it.
A crack that only weeps water is a waterproofing job, not a structural one. We see homeowners panic over a wet hairline. You probably don’t need a pier or a beam for that. You need the water handled.
