Concrete Leveling in Somerville, MA
A private driveway panel and the city sidewalk are separate decisions. Measure both edges before a lift.
A dropped private driveway panel in Somerville may be lifted if the concrete is sound, the new slope has a safe water outlet, and the work does not change the public sidewalk or curb cut. Those are three separate checks. 603 Basement Solutions measures both sides of the joint, the garage or parking transition, and the route to the street before proposing polyurethane leveling. We will not sell a private-slab lift as a repair to a city sidewalk or a moving house foundation.
Find the actual low piece
The first useful photograph shows the full driveway from the building to the street. Close-ups of a crack cannot show whether one panel has settled, the entire run was poured at the wrong grade, or the curb and sidewalk set a fixed elevation. We measure the step at each joint and record the direction of drainage. On a narrow approach, an inch of movement at one edge can change how a door clears, how a vehicle crosses the joint, and where runoff collects. No lift target is chosen before those fixed edges are recorded.
We look for a coherent slab that has moved as one piece. A diagonal crack, loose corner, substantial spalling or rocking section may mean the concrete cannot be lifted as a useful unit. Old patches can disguise a broken edge; we probe and photograph them rather than count the patch as sound material. We also check whether downspouts discharge onto the approach. A lift that removes a puddle beside a tire path but redirects it toward the wall is a bad repair.
Private panel or public
crossing?
Somerville’s Engineering Division maintains city infrastructure and lists driveway and curb-cut permits among its online applications. That does not mean every private leveling job needs a curb-cut permit. It does mean a proposal near the street must identify which concrete is private, which crossing is public, and whether work would alter the curb or sidewalk. We do not infer the boundary from the appearance of a joint. The owner may have a survey, permit, or city record that resolves it; if not, we define the uncertainty before quoting work in that area.

What an injection lift can and cannot do
ACI RAP-11 on slabjacking describes raising a settled slab and filling support voids. It is a method reference, not evidence that this driveway has a void. 603 checks access, slab thickness where known, crack pattern, buried services and adjacent structures before choosing injection locations. Polyurethane can move a suitable panel in controlled increments. It cannot turn fragmented concrete into a single sound slab or correct a failed footing under the house.
The goal is a usable transition and drainage path, not a promise that the entire driveway will become perfectly level. We note the before-elevation at the garage or parking pad, at the first private joint, and near the sidewalk. The written scope should state which points are intended to change and which fixed edges will remain. If the public crossing is high relative to the private panel, we need to know whether a useful private-side lift is even possible without creating a new ridge.
Surface scaling without settlement may fit concrete repair better. A broken or poorly founded panel may need concrete slab pouring after removal and base preparation. A crack in the house wall or movement of its bearing elements belongs to structural and foundation repair. Leveling an exterior panel does not stabilize the foundation. We explain those boundaries on the estimate so one symptom is not turned into three products.
Somerville access and water details
We check where a hose and crew can work without obstructing an occupied sidewalk or parking access. That is an address-level observation, not a claim that every Somerville driveway is narrow. A buried water, gas, electrical or drain line can change where a hole is drilled. We ask for utility information and mark known routes before work. Where a city-side element is involved, the owner and contractor must confirm the applicable requirements rather than assuming permission from a private-property quote.
Runoff is just as important as clearance. A panel can be raised at the building and still drain toward a low point behind the sidewalk. We trace the whole route, including any channel, catch basin, planting strip or neighboring boundary. We do not promise to discharge water into public infrastructure or onto an adjoining parcel. A drainage problem that reaches past the driveway may call for grading or a separate water-management design. If the basement also leaks, basement waterproofing requires its own entry-path diagnosis; lifting paving might improve surface flow without closing the actual leak.

What a 603 customer says about the team

Suzanne Bohman ★★★★★
“Let’s start with the reasonable quote! That was a breath of fresh air for sure. We went ahead with 603 and Gerald, Kelvin and Adaury showed up to shore up our aging house. Their work is one of the houses better features now! They were fast, efficient and installed the cleanest, strongest appearing support system. They were super polite and friendly too. I cannot say enough positive things about these folks.”
Compare the estimate against the fixed edges
A useful Somerville proposal names the panel, its present elevations, the desired transition, the likely injection locations, and the areas excluded. It should state whether joint sealing or crack work follows the lift and whether a city-side approval question remains open. We also say what result would make us stop: a corner that separates, an adjacent sidewalk that cannot be safely matched, unexpected buried infrastructure, or movement that starts pushing water toward the building.
Take wide photographs after rain and one from the garage or parking space looking toward the street. Mark the spot a tire bottoms out or a person trips. If earlier repairs were made, bring the invoice or photos. We can then compare a limited lift with replacement on the same measured problem rather than compare two unrelated prices.
When not to buy leveling
Do not buy a lift solely because a crack looks uneven. If the panel is shattered, the base keeps washing out, the public sidewalk or curb must move, or the house foundation is shifting, pause for the appropriate repair plan. Do not accept a quote that omits the new water route. A sound panel with a modest drop can be worth keeping, but only if the completed geometry works from the building all the way to the next fixed edge.
Show us the concrete that moved
We will inspect the affected panel, explain what can be kept, and put a useful scope in writing.
