Concrete Slab Pouring in Salem, MA

A new private entry walk must end cleanly at the city sidewalk without creating a trip lip.

Replacing a Salem home’s private entry-walk section is a new-concrete project only when the old piece or its geometry no longer makes sense to keep. 603 Basement Solutions would map the entire route from door to city sidewalk, identify which concrete is private, and set finished elevations at both ends before proposing demolition or a pour. The new walk must be usable during ordinary foot traffic and send rain away from the building. A stable chip does not justify a whole new slab, and a public sidewalk cannot be folded into a private bid without a separate authorization check.

Confirm the footprint and the property boundary

A long front approach can have several panels installed at different times. We identify the damaged panel, existing joints, steps, tree roots or utilities that might affect excavation, and the line where private pavement meets city sidewalk. A color or texture change alone does not prove ownership. The proposed replacement boundary should be drawn on a simple plan and checked on site. We would not promise city-side work because a private slab happens to touch it.

We measure elevations at the door, every step, the proposed replacement’s far edge and the public crossing. A new slab that creates a lip at either end is not an improvement. We also trace drainage. If the existing walk sends rain toward the house, the new grade must address that path within the feasible site geometry; if water is entering through a separate door or foundation detail, the concrete quote should say so rather than claim to fix it automatically.

What if the existing piece
can stay?

We inspect soundness, cracks and movement. A concrete repair may be sufficient for a bounded broken edge. A whole intact low panel may be assessed for concrete leveling if lifting it can leave safe transitions. Replacing the whole piece is more defensible if it is fractured through, its base has failed, or a corrected route cannot be achieved while retaining it. We explain what we observed and why the lesser option does or does not fit. This prevents a new-pour quote from becoming the default response to every uneven front walk.

Plan the base, joints and finished walking surface

The American Concrete Institute residential concrete guide covers support beneath the slab, jointing and curing. The base should be examined after the old panel is removed and prepared for the site-specific walk. No page can prescribe one universal thickness, mix or reinforcement for every Salem property. We would put the selected design and its assumptions in the written proposal, including what happens if demolition reveals an unstable base or an unidentified service.

ACI’s joints chapter distinguishes contraction joints from isolation joints at fixed features. A private front walk meets older concrete, perhaps a step or wall, and eventually a city-sidewalk seam. We would show where the new joints are intended and how the final edge meets the pieces that remain. Visible joints are part of controlled slab construction, not an admission that the new work is defective. They cannot guarantee the walk will never crack.

Construction access and curing

The primary entrance may be unavailable while old concrete is removed and the new section cures. Before starting, we would identify an alternate household entry, how pedestrians are kept away from the work, and where delivery materials can be staged without assuming use of city sidewalk or parking. A dense street frontage can affect access, but every Salem site is different. The quote should not treat public sidewalk occupancy as a free extension of the private work area.

NRMCA’s curing guidance explains the importance of moisture and temperature protection after placement. Reopening the entry depends on the chosen concrete and conditions; we would give an actual project instruction rather than a universal number of hours. A textured finish should support the walking route and fit the drainage plan. Fresh concrete is unlikely to match decades-old city or private pavement in color, and we would not promise an invisible seam.

Thomas B ★★★★★

“I worked with Branden on an interior radon mitigation quote for my basement. This was a project with some complex aspects. I had a great collaboration with Branden and all my questions were answered. The installation was done with great attention to detail and exactly as I had requested, on time with no surprises. Highly recommended and very professional!”

Salem's public-sidewalk process is separate

The City of Salem Engineering information page lists a Curb Cut/Sidewalk Modification application and a Street Opening and Trench Permit application. Which, if either, applies depends on the work boundary and access plan. A new slab wholly on private property is not automatically a city-sidewalk modification. If the proposed demolition, replacement or staging enters the public way, the relevant city requirements must be confirmed first. We would state the scope in writing before anyone assumes the city concrete is included.

Ask each bidder to identify the removal limits, existing pieces to keep, target heights at the door and sidewalk, base work, joints, finish, access plan and cure protection. These details distinguish a useful private walkway from a generic square-foot price. If cracks or movement also reach a bearing wall or footing, structural and foundation repair should inspect that separately. A new walk surface cannot stabilize the house.

When not to buy a new front walk

Do not replace sound concrete for one stable chip. Do not pour over a loose base, bury an unidentified utility, send water toward the doorway or leave an unsafe lip at the city crossing. Do not assume a private contract authorizes work on public sidewalk. Send one wide photo from the door to the street, a side view of each step, close photos of the damage and a rain-day view if water is part of the complaint. The inspection should establish the smallest scope that restores the actual route.
