Yes, a support column can sometimes be removed or relocated, but only after the load it carries gets picked up somewhere else first. That usually means a properly sized beam, a new footing, and a fresh column or post set in the right spot. A single column or floor-support job starts at $1,300 to $2,500. We won’t just pull a post and hope. The weight has to go somewhere safe before the old column leaves.

A column in your basement is doing a job. It holds up a beam, and that beam holds up the floor over your head. Take the support away and the load doesn’t disappear. It rides on whatever is left. So the real question is where the weight goes when the column comes out.

Most basement columns we see in New Hampshire are steel lally columns. Some are old wood posts. Either way, before one moves, we figure out what it carries and how far the beam has to span without it. A longer span needs a bigger beam, and a bigger beam needs solid bearing at each end. That can mean a new footing poured under the new location, plus a column or post rated for the load. This is the floor-support and supplemental-support side of our work, not waterproofing.

A column can move when the framing above can be re-spanned with a beam the building can support, and when there’s room for a real footing under the new post. It can’t move when the column sits on a footing that’s the only thing holding a sagging beam, and there’s nowhere good to shift the load. In that case we tell you. Sometimes the answer is to leave it and fix the reason it’s sagging instead. You don’t always need to move a post to solve the problem under it.

What drives the cost: how much load the column carries, the new beam size, whether we have to pour a new footing, and how many posts the job needs. A straightforward swap or relocation of a single floor-support post starts at $1,300 to $2,500. A few things we watch for in older New England homes. A wood post sitting straight on a dirt or stone floor with no footing. A lally column that’s rusted at the base where the slab stays damp. A beam that already dips in the middle, which tells us the existing support is under-built or sinking. If the post is sinking because the soil under it gave way, the fix may be a helical pier under a new footing rather than just moving the post. Why is my basement support post sinking? Usually the soil under the footing settled, or the post never had a real footing to begin with.
