If it runs back to the rebar, water gets to the steel, the steel rusts, and rust swells and cracks the concrete around it over time. A column carries load straight down. A big enough void in the wrong spot weakens that path. So the question is never whether there is honeycombing. It is how deep it goes, and whether it reached the steel.
How the repair works
You do not smear new mortar over the top and call it done. Loose patch over a void traps the problem and hides it.
The honeycomb gets chipped back to solid, sound concrete first. All the crumbly, hollow material comes out. The surface gets cleaned so the patch actually bonds.
