What is the definition of a sump pump? Can a sump pump be used in a crawl space too?

A sump pump is a pump that sits in a pit (the sump) at the low point of your basement or crawl space, and it pumps out the water that collects there before it floods the floor. Yes, the same kind of pump works in a crawl space too. We use one in both places.

Here is how it works in plain terms. Water finds the lowest spot. We dig a pit there and set the pump inside it. As groundwater rises, it fills the pit. A float switch trips. The pump kicks on and pushes the water out through a discharge line, away from your foundation. Then it shuts off and waits for the next time.

In a basement, the pump is the engine at the end of our interior drainage. The Forever Dry System runs a full-perimeter drain channel around the inside edge of the floor, right at the floor wall joint where most leaks show up. That channel feeds the sump pit. We size the pump at 1/2 hp for every 120 feet of drain, so it can keep up. Then we add a 12-mil wall vapor barrier and a dehumidifier so the room stays dry, not just the floor. That whole system is the basement fix.

In a crawl space, the job is the same but the build is different. We do not call it Forever Dry down there. A crawl space gets crawlspace encapsulation: a 12-mil wall vapor barrier, a 20-mil floor vapor barrier, dimpled drainage matting under the floor barrier, spray-foam-sealed seams, and a dehumidifier. The matting gives water a path to travel to the pit. The sump sits at the low point and pumps it out, same idea as the basement. A dry, sealed crawl space matters more than people think. The Department of Energy notes that up to about a third of a home’s heat loss can come from an uninsulated foundation or crawl space, so sealing it helps your floors above feel warmer too.

Why does water show up in the first place? When your house was built, the crew dug out around the foundation and then backfilled the hole with the same dirt. That disturbed backfill stays looser than the packed ground around it. Loose soil drains slowly and holds water against your wall. Here in New England, frost heave makes it worse. Cold ground swells and pushes on the walls through the winter. So the water has somewhere to go, and a sump pump gives it a way out.

A quick teaching note. If your basement or crawl space is dry and stays dry through a wet spring, you may not need a sump system yet. A pump alone, with no drainage feeding it, often just sits there while water comes in somewhere else. The pump is the last step. The drainage is what catches the water. We will tell you if you only need part of the picture.

What about backup? Power tends to fail in the exact storm that floods you. So we offer a battery backup. It is battery only. For a crawl space, it tracks the square footage of barrier, the matting, and the sealing. Crawl space encapsulation runs $3,000 to $25,000.
