Design changes with the building
A single-family slab gets one core hole, one pipe, one fan. A multi-unit building on a shared foundation sometimes needs the same setup, and sometimes needs a system for each mitigation zone if the sub-slab conditions are not uniform across the footprint. We test before we design, we do not assume one system fits a building it has not been measured for.
What we find in older Woburn basements specifically
A lot of the city’s older mill-era foundations are fieldstone or brick rather than poured concrete, and those foundations do not seal the same way a modern slab does. Sub-slab suction, the standard system, needs a reasonably continuous layer under the floor to pull air from. A long-term test, 90 days or more, gives a more accurate annual average, because radon levels shift with season and how much a house is sealed up for heat. If your short-term number comes back close to 4.0 rather than well above or below it, that is when the long-term test earns its cost before you spend money on a system you might not need.
