A basement wall in a 100+ year old house usually moves for one of a few reasons: soil pressure from wet ground outside, frost heave in a New England winter, slow settling of the footing under one corner, or a mix of all three over a long life. None of it means the house is falling down today. It means the wall is telling you something. Why an old wall starts to move

Old houses sit on old foundations. Fieldstone, brick, early poured concrete, or block. They have held up for a century, so they are not weak by nature. What changes is the ground around them.

Water is the usual driver. The soil packed back against your foundation is disturbed backfill. It got dug out and put back when the house was built, so it is looser than the ground beside it. Looser fill drains slowly and holds water. Wet soil gets heavy. Heavy soil leans on the wall.

Then add a New Hampshire winter. When that wet backfill freezes, it expands. Frost heave pushes the wall inward. Do that a hundred times over a hundred years and even a strong wall can bow or crack.
